the passenger seat

let the music play

Just a quick note: that movie post I mentioned in my last post will be posted tomorrow, after I have watched Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

This post will be about the music I’ve been listening to as of late.

My music taste has definitely changed a lot recently. I remember in year 7, Eminem and D12’s “My Band” were all the craze, as well as Usher and Chingy and all those guys. Man, those were good times. I look back and wonder “what the hell was I thinking?” All I did back then was go with the latest craze and listen to what everyone else was listening to. I remember going onto Take40.com, seeing any cool songs up there and downloading them on Limewire. Yes, Limewire. Awesome times. I was so naïve, and that was probably when I first started actually getting into music. I really didn’t know anything about music before then except that John Farnham and Human Nature were cool and the Bee Gees were okay, because these were the only artists I ever heard in my household.

Shoot forward one or two years and I only listened to indie rock and acoustic guitar artists. Remember back in the day when everyone listened to bands like Fall Out Boy and Panic At The Disco (back when they had the ! in their name)? Yeah, I was part of that craze. That was the only music I listened to for a long time. Throw in Death Cab For Cutie, who, as you probably know by now, are still my favourite, Anberlin, who I’d like to think are set apart from the other indie/punk/alternative bands are are also still a favourite, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, who I actually have not listened to for a long time.

I think my music taste has matured as I have matured. If any of you remember my blogs some time ago, I talked about listening to bands like Lymbyc Systym and This Will Destroy You- indie instrumental soft rock/post-rock. That was a phase where I somehow really got into a genre I had never heard of before and it was nice for a long time. The soft, gentle background music got me through that exam period and it was great.

After that, you might remember my post about MGMT and Empire Of The Sun. That was a short electronic phase. After discovering new post-rock bands, many of them were heavily electronic- and synthesiser-based, and I guess this stems from my liking of The Postal Service (of which Ben Gibbard is the vocalist, so, naturally, I like them).

From there, somehow I’ve started to like Hip-Hop and RnB a lot, mainly since I was introduced to Kanye West a while ago when his latest album was released. Some of my recent downloads include:

  • Mos Def – The Ecstatic
  • Mos Def & Talib Kweli: Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star
  • Ne-Yo – Year Of The Gentleman
  • Ne-Yo – In My Own Words
  • Akon – Freedom
  • The Foreign Exchange – Leave It All Behind
  • The Foreign Exchange – Connected
  • Wyclef Jean – Carnival Vol. II: Memoirs Of An Immigrant

A lot of these have been due to James’ influence. Right now I’m really feeling The Foreign Exchange and some of Wyclef Jean. I’ve pretty much been listening to only those artists for the past few days. There’s just something about the beats and production of some of the tracks that sounds really fresh to me. They feel clean, too, unlike to mess of guitars and drums and things like that in other music. It’s easy on the ears.

Actually, I’m listening to Norah Jones’ album Come Away With Me right now, which I’ve been meaning to obtain for a long time now. Really nice stuff; soothing.

I’ve noticed my music taste has really broadened in recent times. I find myself liking songs on the radio that I never would have thought I’d like, and that I know other people don’t like at all. I guess I’ve grown to be more open with this sort of thing, and I’m no longer trying to follow any trend or be “cool” and go with the crowd. I’ve just been listening with my own ears and deciding what I like and going with that. I think this is a result of growing up and having a lesser sense of peer pressure and more individuality. Oh gosh, that’s made me think about English. Yuck.

On a completely different topic, today I went to the city. Picked up a few bargain shirts which I’m really happy with, but while shopping I saw David Lam and Gavin shopping together at General Pants. Does anyone remember them? The crazy baller guys from a few years back; they were in year 12 when we were in year 8. Anyway, they were good friends back in the day, and I just find it really nice to see them still going out together and hanging out even four years after they graduated from Ruse. This is what I hope for in the future. I still want to be hanging out with my high school friends throughout university and beyond, and for those that this is not possible, I definitely want to at least keep in touch online or something like that. Reunions every now and then would be awesome, too, just to see everyone’s faces again and to catch up and see how people have changed.

But yeah, I think that’s enough sentimentality. I really love my friends here at Ruse, and you’re all awesome people, so thank you for that.

Anyway, that’ll be all today. Expect that movie post tomorrow, but until then, adios.

PS. Blog title? It’s a song by an artist I liked for a short time a while ago, after going to a concert… Well done to Swami for picking up the blog title, “Too Much Food” by Jason Mraz off his album Waiting For My Rocket To Come. You can have twenty points for that. And also thanks to everyone else’s comments. It’s nice to see all the different opinions on MasterChef.

steadier footing

Disclaimer: This blog is going to be a bit different to my other blogs. For the first time, there will be no pictures. This will be more of a thought-based blog. As I’m beginning to write this, I’m not really sure what direction this will take, so please bear with me as I go off on many tangents.

Anyway, I was listening to a bit of Death Cab For Cutie today (as I very often do), and I heard the song “Steadier Footing”, off The Photo Album, my favourite song off one of my favourite albums by the band. I don’t know why (maybe it’s because of how late it is), but along with all the talk recently about our futures- uni, careers, life in general- it got me thinking about what life will be like after we leave high school; and what will happen to the friendships we have formed these past five and a bit years. I’ve listened to this song before and had the same thoughts, but this time I’m blogging about it, which is really the whole reason I made this blog in the first place- to put down any thoughts or findings I have during the day. Here are the lyrics for “Steadier Footing”:

it’s gotten late and now i want to be alone
all of our friends were here, they all have gone home
and here i sit on the front porch
watching the drunks stumble forth into the night
you gave me a heart attack, i did not see you there
i thought you had disappeared so early away from here
and this is the chance i never got to make a move
but we just talk about the people we’ve met in the last five years
and will we remember them in ten more?
i let you bum a smoke, you quit this winter past
i’ve tried twice before, but like this, it just will not last

It’s a short song by Ben Gibbard; only 1:47 long, but it’s a very succint way of saying what he wants to say. I can just imagine a situation just like this at the end of this year, where we would be having some sort of party or get-together (schoolies?) at the end of our high school life. Then, one by one, people would leave, and that might be the last time we see some of the people we’ve been to school with for six years. Scary thought, isn’t it? For some, you may be in the situation described by Ben Gibbard; “and this is the chance i never got to make a move”. Maybe this move might be with someone of the opposite sex, or it may even be with someone else who you’ve always wanted to be friends with or wanted to know better, but have never gotten the chance to talk to them properly. Regret is not a nice feeling.

but we just talk about the people in the last five years
and will we remember them in ten more?

This is the phrase that really strikes me in this song; it just so perfectly sums up the way I feel about all of my friends and the people I’ve met here at Ruse. As corny as it may sound and as unbelievable as it may be, you all mean a lot to me. I feel as though our grade has grown really tight over the years; we all say “hi!” to each other in hallways or if we see each other elsewhere, sometimes even if we don’t know the other person that well. I think this is really a testament to the environment of our school and to the people in our grade. I don’t think I could find another school that would harbour the same kind of friendliness that is so abundant here, and for that I am very grateful to belong here. Luckily for us, however, all of us will be going to university next year; most of us to the same few, and therefore we won’t really lose very many friendships at all, at least for the next five or so years. But the song says “will we remember them in ten more?” I really hope so. In ten years, some of us may already have a stable job (maybe not you doctors), and (maybe I’m stretching it here) maybe even a family. To me, the perfect life would be if I could still meet up with all my friends from Ruse and have parties or whatever on weekends. That would be awesome. I think it’s really sad when people lose long-term friends, and six years definitely counts as long-term.

it just will not last

Will it, though? I don’t know. I really hope Ben Gibbard is wrong in that part of the song.

Anyway, more about the song. I find that it’s really appropriate that it’s the first song of an album called The Photo Album. The album title suggests memories, sentimentality, family, friends, while the song talks about the end of something- whether it’s high school or university or whatever, with a photo album the only thing left to remember people by. For us, this would be our yearbook or the year 12 contact book, but I really hope that this won’t be the only way we remember each other.

Instead of looking to the past so much, I think I should think about the future. Where would I want to be in ten years’ time? I would be twenty seven then. I think I would like to be in a decent job that will support me, but with room to move up. Hopefully it’s a job that will challenge me as well as allow me to use some creativity, as in design or media. Family? I’d probably hope to be at least thinking of starting one by then. I don’t know; it’s hard to say.

But I digress. The whole point of this extremely sentimental and corny blog was to just pour out some of the thoughts I’ve had about the past and the future. The title of the song, “Steadier Footing”, kind of reflects the way in which we are grounded by our friends while in school. When we move into university and out into the big world, we might lose this as we move on to bigger and better things; but that’s a good thing. Friends are still important, though- especially the ones you’ve known for years.

sleep spent

It’s 12:35am and I really should be sleeping right now. The reason I’m blogging so late is due to the fact that I had more homework than usual today. But alas, the show must go on, and I will blog. Because it’s so late, there won’t be much in the way of detailed comments or things like that like I usually do, but it’s better than nothing. Also, it’s going to be a bit of a break from all the art I’ve been posting lately, and rather it will be about another of my passions: music.

As you may have noticed, the title of every single blog post to date (including the title of my entire blog) has been a title of a Death Cab For Cutie song, this blogs title being a song from Something About Airplanes. The one exception was the very first post, which was a line from “The Passenger Seat”. I guess this is sort of a theme to my blog, but I’m not really sure how much longer I can keep this up. I think they have about eighty or ninety song titles, so there’s still a lot for me to work with I guess. I may move to Anberlin or another band once I can’t use any more of Death Cab’s.

The reason for my use of Death Cab For Cutie titles is simply because they are my favourite band. Period. They have been for a long time now (it’s measured in years), ever since Janet first introduced them to me. What I love about them is their trademark instrumentation, which is usually calm and relaxing, with easy and clean tones that are very soothing to the ear. On top of that, Ben Gibbard (singer, songwriter, guitarist and occasional pianist for the band) is a genius lyricist. So many of his songs relate to something I’ve experienced in my life, and so I can really relate to what he’s singing about in each of his songs. He writes love songs, songs about family, separation, loneliness, anxiety, society… often using very original extended metaphors to get his point across, which I love. His voice has a kind of rawness to it; and it is the honesty in his tone that really sells his lyrics.

Death Cab’s style has been described as indie rock, indie pop and alternative (although technically they are no longer indie as they are signed to a major label), and they have made six studio albums, numerous EPs and a few live albums. Their latest album, Narrow Stairs, peaked at number one on the US Billboard charts. As well as these, Ben Gibbard has made two albums of his own and Chris Walla (guitarist, producer) released his first album early last year.

Formed in 1997, Death Cab For Cutie consists of (from left to right in the image below) Jason McGerr (drums), Nicholas Harmer (bass), Ben Gibbard (vocals/lyricist/guitarist) and Chris Walla (guitarist/producer).

My favourite album by this band usually changes over time, but right now it is Plans, from 2005, with Transatlanticism (2003) and The Photo Album (2001) as close seconds.

transatlanticism
photoalbum
That’s all for today. Tomorrows will be a more in-depth blog on another topic, possibly a comic or maybe more art…

But lastly, this is my favourite song by Death Cab For Cutie, “Transatlanticism” off the album of the same name. The lyrics and music really resonate with me everytime I hear it.

the atlantic was born today and i’ll tell you how:
the clouds above opened up and let it out.

i was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere
when the water filled every hole.
and thousands upon thousands made an ocean,
making islands where no island should go.
oh no.

most people were overjoyed; they took to their boats.
i thought it less like a lake and more like a moat.
the rhythm of my footsteps crossing flatlands to your door
have been silenced forever more.
and the distance is quite simply much too far for me to row,
it seems farther than ever before.
oh no.

i need you so much closer

i need you so much closer

so come on, come on

lack of color

colour \ˈkə-lər\ n. a visual attribute of things that results from the light they emit or transmit or reflect.

I really love colour. Colour is an integral part to the way we perceive everything (if we aren’t blind) and although it may seem as if it’s just another part of this universe, it’s the way in which colours can be put together to create something aesthetically pleasing that defines art. I feel as if my blog is becoming a sort of art archive, but it’s all I’ve found recently that’s worth blogging about, and my original purpose of this blog was as an archive for all the cool stuff I find on the net. Before I had this blog, I would see something cool and then I would move on, and I would never see it again, but with this I’ll be able to look back at older posts and be inspired once more.

So anyway, the topic of this blog is colour. The following images will be of artworks that stood out to me in terms of colour as I’ve browsed through FFFFOUND! in the past few days. As with my other blogs, click the images for a larger view.

This first image just appears to be really clean to me, showing the moods or feelings associated with certain colours.

colourwords
I’ve mentioned in my previous blogs that I like typography.

typography \tī-ˈpä-grə-fē\ n. the art and techniques of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs.

The next image is a good example of two of the aspects of art I like, put together; typography and colour.

typography
I like the use of colour and the arrangement of the items in the next image. The way the rainbow has been overlayed on top of the items gives it a really nice look, and I’m a big fan of the dirty paper effect as seen in this artwork and the previous image.

myplayground
Speaking of colour, I think I should go to India one day. They have a whole festival dedicated to it.

Holi, also called the Festival of Colours, is a popular Hindu spring festival observed in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and other countries with large Hindu diaspora. The main day, Holi, also known as DhulhetiDhulandi or Dhulendi, is celebrated by people throwing colored powder and colored water at each other.

colourfestival
Not much to say about this next one. I think it’s a rooster. I like the brightness of the whole piece and the light, complementary colours.

Now this image is one that I really like. The whole tone of the photograph and the once again complementary colours of the balloons really caught my eye when I first saw it. A great photo with great editing.

balloonssky
Another photo of coloured balloons. The balloons in this one contrast the kind of monotonic hue of the background.

balloonswater
I’m not sure what this next image is of; I think it’s either balloons or flowers or both. What matters is that it’s got some nice colours.

balloonsflowers
Here’s an image that will catch your eye. I don’t know what it is or how they did it, but it looks really cool.

redblackwhiteorange
Moving on to some other artworks- these aren’t as bright as the previous ones have been, but they still look good nonetheless.

I don’t know what style this is, but I like it. The red and brown splatters have been done really nicely, and I like the randomness of the flecks of paint all over it, with the focus on the more structured face in the middle of the chaos.

fractalgirl
Again, a woman. But this time she’s somehow been fused with a deer in a forest. I can’t quite put my finger on why I like this one, but it looks interesting. Reminds me of an ad I’ve seen, can’t remember what for.

girldeer
And now the last two are back to some brighter pieces.

The first is quite simple, but it’s that quality that I like about it. The swirls are simple but elegant, and I like the way it fades from blue to purple and then to red and yellow.

bluepurple
And the last one is simple. I don’t think I need to say much about it except that it’s a photograph of a photograph of some sky against the sky. So, I heard you like photographs of the sky…

skypolaroid
Hmm, just as a random afterthought, here’s another photograph. This is of the desk I spend most of my life at, and the one I’m sitting at now, writing this blog.

desk
This blog is named after another Death Cab For Cutie song, again off the album Transatlanticism.

and when i see you
i really see you upside down
but my brain knows better
it picks you up and turns you around
turns you around, turns you around

if you feel discouraged
that there’s a lack of color here
please don’t worry lover
it’s really bursting at the seams
for absorbing everything
the spectrum’s a to z

this is fact not fiction
for the first time in years
all the girls in every girlie magazine
can’t make me feel any less alone
i’m reaching for the phone

to call at 7:03
on your machine I slur a plea for you to come home
but i know it’s too late
i should have given you a reason to stay
given you a reason to stay

this is fact not fiction
for the first time in years

shooting stars and satellites

They say the first time for anything is always the hardest, and they’re right; especially for blogging. I guess the first entry is the time to tell everyone what to expect in blogs to come.

I guess for me, this blog is going to be an outlet for any thoughts I have on life, people, media, anything really. I’ll probably also post a lot of videos from my second home of YouTube and new music or comics that I find.

You might be wondering why I named my blog “the passenger seat”. It’s named after the song “Passenger Seat” by Death Cab For Cutie (my favourite band) from the album Transatlanticism. Ben Gibbard is a genius lyricist; no one else really comes close to his standard in my opinion.

i roll the window down
and then begin to breathe in
the darkest country road
and the strong scent of evergreen
from the passenger seat as you are driving me home.

then looking upwards
i strain my eyes and try
to tell the difference between
shooting stars and satellites
from the passenger seat as you are driving me home.

“do they collide?”
i ask and you smile.
with my feet on the dash
the world doesn’t matter.

when you feel embarrassed then i’ll be your pride
when you need directions then i’ll be the guide
for all time.
for all time.

I guess this blog will be my view of things from the passenger seat.
